It’s been three months since I am working remotely with Airbase and I can help you to understand how it feels like working with a complete remote organization. In this post, I will answer all the myths that I had before joining a Remote organization and the questions people are asking me about the remote organization. Let’s start by understanding what actually is Remote work.

What is Remote Work?

Remote work is a working style where it’s not mandatory to go to an office. It is based on the concept that you need not be under any surveillance or at any specific place for completing your work.
You might have heard people telling you about the flexibility they have while working remotely or how they travel to different cities or countries without worrying about their jobs. Yes, remote jobs do provide this flexibility.

Remote v/s Hybrid v/s WFH

I won’t go into a detailed discussion about this. But this is what I feel about these three types of work setups. Remote jobs are where you don’t have to go office you can have the flexibility to work at any time from anywhere, whereas Hybrid is the concept which I like the least. Because half of your team will be at the office and half is at the home which might cause a FOMO. Or maybe a lack of communication. At last work from home is when your office is temporary working remotely, but you have fixed work timings that you have to follow to work with your team and you need to be available.

Myths about remote jobs

  • Remote works kill the culture. No, it doesn’t. The culture I experienced at the Airbase is the best to date.
  • No, you don’t have to work on different timezones. You can work on the time that suits you the best. Moreover, it’s an organizational thing and you better clear this with your HR. In my case, it’s not fixed. I keep on changing my working hours.
  • It’s hard to stay connected with your colleagues. Yes, it is because you can’t just go on your desk and communicate. Most of the remote jobs follow asynchronous communication and honestly that teaches you patience. But your colleagues will always be available if you need something from them or just want to have a talk. They are just a message away.
  • People keep on saying it’s doesn’t look like a real job. But it is a real job. You have your meetings, you have deadlines to meet. The only thing you don’t have to do is to travel to the office.
  • The biggest myth is you can never have fun with your colleagues. It’s not the case. The remote jobs organized offsite meetups, they do organize weekly game sessions to interact more.
  • You get paid less in a remote job. No, you get paid enough sometimes even more than a regular office, you don’t have to travel(saves a lot of money and time). You don’t need to buy a lot of clothes for the office :P

What did I use to feel?

Earlier I used to believe this is a myth and by joining a remote organization I have to be always available. But believe me, that’s not the case with remote organizations. And here I am talking about remote organizations, not the one which is offering work from home because of the pandemic.

A lot of organizations started working from home because of the Pandemic and most of us even experienced how it feels like work from home. Honestly, when I started working from home I use to be online all the time. So, that my teammates or manager doesn’t feel that I am not working. There is always a feeling of guilt when we leave our laptops and go for lunch. And someone messages us at that same point in time. We end up working for 12–14 hours straight because of this guilt.

After working from home for a year I felt I don’t have a life. Either I am sleeping or working there is no in-between.

Later I started looking out for the opportunity and I got an offer from Airbase. They are complete remote even before a pandemic. I was quite confused about whether I am ready to go complete remote, which might end with unlimited hours of work, no work-life balance. But I was wrong. I had a discussion with my interviewers they were really friendly and explained why they enjoy working remotely. So, I decided to take up a chance. And that was the best decision I had in my life.

Moreover, if you want to apply for a job you can apply here, or need a referral you can ping me on any of my social media handles.
